The Cabinet of Ministers does not rule out the possibility of raising electricity tariffs due to Russian attacks
Ukraine's electricity tariff may rise amid new Russian attacks on the energy sector. The Cabinet of Ministers is studying various options. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko in an interview with Bloomberg.
Galushchenko did not rule out the possibility of raising electricity tariffs for the population and noted that the government is exploring various options for financing the repair of damaged energy facilities.
Last June, after the winter attacks, Ukraine almost doubled the price of electricity.
"Today, the situation is even more complicated than last year, as we have lost a lot of hydroelectric power and are forced to carry out scheduled repairs of nuclear units," he said.
According to Galushchenko, it is still impossible to fully establish the consequences of the Russian attacks and the damage. As he noted, the scale can reach billions of dollars.
"The destruction was significant - both in the power industry and in power transmission. The situation is complicated. We still do not understand the extent of the damage, as many facilities are still in ruins and we cannot get to them," he added.
The minister also warned that depending on the situation, Ukrainians may be asked to save electricity as much as possible in July and August.
"The Russians cannot cause a repeat of the blackouts of 2022 and 2023. Even in the event of huge losses, we will have a basic generation that covers 30% to 50% of our needs," explained Galushchenko.
The situation with electricity in Ukraine
It is worth noting that the heating season in Ukraine is over, and it was managed to pass without blackouts.
However, in March, Russia resumed its attacks on the energy sector. After massive attacks, there were power outages in several regions, with the most difficult situation in Kharkiv and the region. Blackouts are still partially in effect there. As you know, the Zmiiv thermal power plant was seriously damaged in the region.
