Holidays and non-working days in 2024

In 2024, Ukrainians will have 11 official days off. According to Article 73 of the Labor Code of Ukraine, holidays and non-working days include:

  • January 1 - New Year's Day;
  • March 8 - International Women's Day;
  • May 1 - Labor Day;
  • May 8 - Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945;
  • June 28 - Constitution Day of Ukraine;
  • July 15 - Day of Ukrainian Statehood;
  • August 24 - Independence Day of Ukraine;
  • October 1 - Day of Defenders of Ukraine;
  • December 25 - Christmas Day.

The said Article also stipulates that work shall not be performed on the days of religious holidays, which are

  • one day (Sunday) - Easter;
  • one day (Sunday) - Trinity;
  • December 25 - Christmas.

In peacetime, holidays were days off, when work was prohibited, except in cases established by law.

Accordingly, it was stipulated that if an employee was required to work on a public holiday and a non-working day, such work was paid at double the rate or, at the employee's request, the employee could be granted another day off for working on that day.

With the entry into force on 24.03.2022 of the Law of Ukraine "On the Organization of Labor Relations under Martial Law" dated 15.03.2022 No. 2136-IX, which amended the labor legislation, the provision prohibiting work on a day off during martial law was temporarily suspended.

In other words, the suspension of Articles 71 and 73 of the Labor Code means that there are no holidays and non-working days during martial law and no possibility not to work on these days. Therefore, work on these days is paid to the employee in the usual amount.
