The Hague launches a mechanism for compensating Ukrainians

An international register of damages has been launched in The Hague, where citizens will be able to submit applications starting in April. This was reported by Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine Iryna Mudra in a commentary to the Voice of America.

"It will be possible to submit applications to the register starting in April. The categories of victims and categories of damage have already been approved by the registry board and must be certified by the conference of the parties, which will be done in April," the Deputy Minister said.

Iryna Mudra reminded that a compensation commission will be established under a multilateral international agreement to consider each specific case. Subsequently, management bodies will be established to look for sources of funding.

According to the deputy minister, it will take at least a year for this mechanism to work, as all organizational procedures must be followed.

"That is, it will take at least a year, because the relevant norms of international law must be observed. Therefore, unfortunately, no matter how much I would like it, we cannot say that it will be possible to receive compensation tomorrow, but we are working on it to make it work so that people will eventually have a place to go to receive compensation for damage," she emphasized.
