New status of English in Ukraine: President signs law

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed Law No. 3760-IX , which establishes the status of English as a language of international communication in Ukraine.

The document will come into force on the date of its publication, except for certain provisions that will come into effect after the end of martial law.

The purpose of the Law is to increase Ukraine's competitiveness, increase its investment and tourist attractiveness, expand the use of English in public spheres of public life and create favorable conditions for Ukrainian citizens to learn English.

Among other things, the Law defines the categories of civil servants who are required to speak English:

- civil servants of category A, heads of local state administrations, their first deputies and deputies; 2 years after the termination of martial law;

- for civil servants of categories B and C, employees of the prosecutor's office, the National Police (senior and middle management), tax and customs authorities, a period of 4 years after the war is set for learning English to obtain the relevant position.

The law provides for the mandatory study and use of English at all levels of education, including in preschools.

The law also stipulates the use of English in the work of government agencies, local self-government, culture and healthcare.

In addition, information should be duplicated in English at train stations, bus stations, airports, and in some types of transportation. This will happen in 2 years after the law comes into force.
