Food safety: discounted goods - what you should pay attention to

For Ukrainians, the New Year's table always symbolizes celebration and prosperity, so choosing dishes and purchasing food for them sometimes takes more than a week. Retailers use various measures to attract more customers, one of the most effective of which is the use of promotional discounts.

The State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection reminds that in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On Advertising", advertising about price reductions and sales must contain the following information

  • place of sale;
  • start date
  • end date;
  • the ratio of the new price to the previous selling price of the goods or the amount of the discount.

It also often happens that price tags for goods on store shelves are "promotional", with a discount, but at the checkout the buyer hears a completely different figure. It is worth knowing that the buyer has the right to pay the price indicated on the price tag, because it was on the basis of such information that the purchase decision was made.

Once again, we remind consumers of the importance of carefully studying the mandatory information about the product that is indicated on its labeling! Especially when the price is significantly reduced, you should pay special attention to the shelf life of the food product.

If your consumer rights have been violated and the business entity refuses to satisfy your fair claims in accordance with the applicable law, please contact the territorial office of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safetyand Consumer Protection in your region.
